LN# 8 Cells
Cells Cells are the basic unit of living organisms. The cell theory describes the connection between living things and cells. The cell theory has 3 parts.
The Cell Theory 1.All organisms are made of one or more cells. 2.The cell is the basic unit of organization of organisms. 3.All cells come from preexisting cells.
Prokaryote vs. Eukaryote There are two types of cells. 1.Prokaryotic cells Do not have membrane bound organelles. They make up single celled organisms called bacteria. 2.Eukaryotic cells Contain membrane bound organelles. They make up single and multi cellular organisms. Multi = humans Single = paramecium
Organelles Membrane bound structures inside the cell. Organelles allow specialized functions to occur inside the cell. Some organelles include: –Mitochondria –Chloroplast –Nucleus –Plasma membrane
Plant vs. Animal Cells
Only in Plant Cells Cell wall –provides structure and support –also found in bacteria and fungi Chloroplast –uses energy from the sun to make carbohydrates Large vacuole –used for storage
Only in Animal Cells Centriole –help cell during cell division
Summary 1.What is a cell? 2.What are the parts of the cell theory? 3.What is a prokaryotic cell? 4.What is a eukaryotic cell? 5.What are organelles? 6.What is the difference between a plant and animal cell? 7.What is a chloroplast? 8.What is a centriole?
